George D. O’Clock, PhD, is the author of Electrotherapeutic Devices: Principles, Design and Applications (Artech House, 2007). Dr. O’Clock’s goal was to provide the first scientifically rigorous (yet accessible) book on electrotherapeutic devices that combines essential technical, biological, legal and clinical background with hands-on guidelines for designing effective electrotherapeutic treatment devices and protocols. While concentrating on electrotherapeutic devices, the book shows the interrelationships, similarities and differences between electrotherapy and magnetotherapy. With respect to electrotherapy, the book focuses on the treatment of cancer (localized tumors), visual system disease (macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa) and wound healing. The magnetotherapy applications in the book address neurological disorders (Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy).
Along with his book, Dr. O’Clock constructed two websites to provide information for those who have interests in the areas of electrotherapy and magnetotherapy. The first eight pages of a website that was constructed for the International Association for Biologically Closed Electric Circuits in Medicine and Biology (IABC), www.iabc.readywebsites.com, provide overviews of electrotherapy and magnetotherapy from the standpoints of ; 1) Origins, 2) Mission, 3) Biophysics, 4) Cells and Tissues and 5) Clinical Studies. Dr. O’Clock also constructed a personal website www.georgeoclock.readywebsites.com that has additional information concerning medical issues (see first two pages and the Biomedicine page). There are also errata sheets for Dr. O’Clock’s Artech House electrotherapy book on the Organization page of the IABC website and the Biomedicine page of his personal website.
As a co-founder of Acuity Medical Inc., Dr. O’Clock serves as a Scientific Advisor to the Board of Directors in the development of the TheraMacTM electrotherapeutic device, currently under development for the treatment of dry macular degeneration. TheraMacTM successfully completed its FDA Phase I double-blind clinical trials and is entering the next phase of clinical studies and development, prior to market release. In addition, Dr. O’Clock is working as a consultant with Dr. Warren Warwick, Department of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Warwick has been very successful in treating cystic fibrosis patients with his patented High Frequency Chest Compression (HFCC) technique. Dr. O’Clock is assisting Dr. Warwick and his staff in an effort to simulate the HFCC system and characterize HFCC mechanisms, which can help to provide improvements in hardware, waveform and therapeutic protocol design.
